  1. How do I know what size of shinai I should get?

    Adult males usually use size 39, adult females use 38 or 39. Shinai regulations can be found here.

  2. Where can I buy a shinai?

    You can purchase one from our club, ask Cochran sensei, or check the online shops listed in the resources section.

    If you know you're hard hitter, it is a good idea to buy at least one backup shinai because there is a chance that yours will break during practice. When yours broke, you don't want to borrow someone else's to break theirs either.

  3. How long does a shinai last?

    That depends on how hard you practice and how hard you hit. Good maintenance can increase your shinai's durability.

  5. What kind of oil should I use for my shinai?

    There are shinai oil sold by Kendo equipment retailers, or you can buy some easily found oil such as: Vegetable, Canola, Olive, Linseed, lemon, machine, etc... as you progress, you'll find a type of oil that you prefer. Light mineral oil would be a good starter such as Vegetable or Canola...

  6. How often should I repair my shinai?

    You should develop a habit of checking for splinters or anything worn before and after practice because it can be very dangerous. Taking it apart to sand off splinters can avoid deadly accidents, and oiling your shinai once every month can increase its durability.

  7. Is a shinai bag necessary?

    Rainy/snowy weathers are harmful to the bamboo. Cold, moistures, especially water can damage your shinai badly. Having a shinai bag can help to minimize the damages. But it is not necessary.

    Check the resources section for online shops, or use your creativity and make one.
